Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April in 1972. Scott was raised by her grandmother as an only daughter by her grandmother. Scott received her education at Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. Scott was a student in secondary school and also worked at two different positions. She was hoping to be a English teacher in high school. She had a dream of becoming an English teacher in high school was cut short after she dropped out of high school. Her career began by performing live poems and her own work. In the end, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. She came out during the Roots concert. After that, she was able to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to gain knowledge of the stage when she performed in the Canada tour of Broadway show Rent. She was also the first signee to Hidden Beach Recordings.
